Legal Assistant (Office Automation)

The incumbent selected for this position will support Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSA) in the Civil Division by providing a variety of legal support services. The work requires specialized knowledge of the processes, procedures, and practices of legal assistance activities in conjunction with knowledge of clerical and administrative office skills and abilities. Formal and on-the-job training will be offered as needed. Example work duties:
Examining, preparing and processing a variety of legal documents, such as complaints, motions, responses, and answers; Producing a variety of written documents and materials using a wide range of office software applications; Maintaining the case file so that it is current and documents are easily accessed; Providing assistance to attorneys in trial preparation, including issuing subpoenas, assembling exhibits, and assisting with discovery management; Calendaring court hearings for individual AUSA calendars; Scheduling conferences and interviews, receiving telephone calls and visitors; Reading, screening and appropriately addressing incoming mail; Arranging travel by preparing itinerary and securing transportation and hotel reservations; Assembling and organizing files and material for disposition or transfer to records depository; and Conducting factual and legal research in legal and non-legal databases. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. To be eligible at the GS-05 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level; or four academic years of education above high school level or a bachelor degree; or a combination of both specialized experience and education. Specialized experience is defined as experience reviewing legal documents such as complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, discovery responses, and subpoenas for accuracy and completeness; typing and formatting correspondence and forms; maintaining file systems; and obtaining needed information from files or general reference sources. Experience:
Successfully completed post-high school education may be used to meet the total one year of specialized experience requirement equivalent to the GS-04 level. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. To be eligible at the GS-06 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level. Specialized experience is defined as experience reviewing legal documents such as complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, discovery responses, and subpoenas for completeness of factual information; retrieving and assembling information for hearing and/or trial use; researching a variety of legal sources to obtain and/or verify information; and using automated software to produce legal related reports, documents, correspondence and related materials. To be eligible at the GS-07 level, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level. Specialized experience in the federal service and could have been gained in the federal, public, or private sector, providing trial support to attorneys by preparing complaints, motions, subpoenas, orders, or other hearing and/or trial documents accurately and in proper format; verifying citations and statutory references contained in legal documents; assisting with discovery, hearing or trial preparation by performing duties such as compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists; and using software applications and legal and non-legal databases to produce legal related reports and documents, conduct factual research, develop tables of contents and indices to briefs, and prepare courtroom presentations. To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.) Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
